István “Kiscsipás” Varga

Varga István "Kiscsipás"István “Kiscsipás” Varga was born in Huedin /Bánffyhunyad in present-day Romania into a family of musicians. His father taught him to play the violin, and he received further tutoring from his uncle, Feri Csipás, who was living next door. He held him by his side and made him whistle the tunes he was playing. Following the popular proverb, he made him eat carrots to improve his whistling. When he was twelve, he was finally given a violin to play.

István describes himself as a keeper of traditions, having been taught by his elders that it is the music of Kalotaszeg that he must delve into, cherishing and sustaining the rich tradition. His repertoire has become exceptionally broad as a result, also encompassing the Romanian folk music of the region. He keeps visiting nearby villages, asking old ladies to sing for him. He listens to records, as well, but composes many of the melodies he plays.

He is a professional musician, earning a living by playing at weddings, christening and to tourists. He is exceptionally keen to travel and gaining the opportunity to present himself and his music to a wider audience.
