Pandur Istvánné “Marcsanéni”

Pandur IstvánnéMy name is Pandúr Istvánné, but I go by the nickname “Marcsanéni.” I am a folk artist; the folk arts of Kalocsa, especially drawing and painting, are both my job and my hobby. I design patterns for tablecloths, runners, pillows and traditional clothing. I also paint on walls and eggs, or—for demonstrative purposes at exhibitions—on paper. I live in a small village called Drágaszél. In 2003, my work was recognized by the Pécsiné Ács Sarolta award.

Originally, the embroideries of Kalocsa were monochromatic; they only became colorful in the first decades of the 20th century. The colors used for painting have very beautiful names. The same patterns and motifs that are painted on the walls of traditional homes often appear on embroideries as well. Floral ornaments representing various types of wild and garden flowers were rather popular, and their names were just as varied.
