Mihalkó Gyula

Mihalkó GyulaAfter high school, I first studied pharmaceutical technology, and later graduated from an engineering polytechnic. I worked in different co-operatives while helping out in my uncle, Mihalkó Zoltán’s hat workshop. In 1997, I opened my own hat workshop with my son, and we both joined the Folk Art Society of Hajdú-Bihar County.

In 2004-2005, I turned my father’s former workshop into a folk art studio, equipped with traditional tools but furnished with modern technology. The guests occupying the rooms above the studio get a chance to make their own hat with the help of a master hatter, or they can just observe the processes of this traditional folk craft. We also have an exhibition space where hats of all kinds made by the Mihalkó hatters are displayed, as well as other folk art objects. Along with numerous accolades, I was granted the Master of Folk Art title by the Ministry of National Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Hungary.
